Communications Workshops

This module is designed to help students communicate their brand in a positive way. Every time you speak to another person, address a group, send an email, post to Facebook, or forward a tweet, you are projecting your personal brand.  Each of these communications should be a polished reflection of who you are and how you want people to view you. 

Create a dynamic presentation          (COM-001)

Learning Objective:  Students learn how to structure and prepare an effective presentation.  Special emphasis is placed on proven practices and avoiding presentation pitfalls.

Topics:  How to construct a speech or presentation that gets your audience’s attention; Mistakes to avoid; Logistics and technology

Deliver a powerful presentation          (COM-002)  

Learning Objective:  Students learn how to comfortably deliver a presentation to large and small groups.  Special emphasis is placed on physical aspects of public speaking.

Topics:  How to be comfortable when speaking in front of a group; Effective techniques – breathing, body language, voice, eye contact, gestures; Recognizing non-verbal audience communications

Master interview techniques             (COM-003)  

Learning Objective:  Students learn the do’s and don’ts of successful interviewing. Special emphasis is placed on understanding hiring processes.

Topics:  Things you can control – resume, application and interview; Making a great first impression; How social media creates your real first impression; The phone interview and your STAR documents

Exercises:  Mock interviews

Promote yourself through writing          (COM-004)  

Learning Objective:  Students learn how to write a compelling resume and bio that will get noticed. Special emphasis is placed on understanding and crafting a resume that matches your career goals.

Topics:  How to create an attention-getting personal bio and resume; Resume screening software: how it works and how to get past it; Types of bios – formal and informal

Exercises:  Resume critique

 Create “ahas” instead of “uh-ohs” when writing  (COM-005)   

Learning Objective:  Students learn secrets to writing effective emails, memos and other types of business communications. Special emphasis is placed on useful, efficient methods, and avoiding common mistakes.

Topics:  How to create an attention-getting personal bio and resume; Resume screening software: how it works and how to get past it; Types of bios – formal and informal

Create a personal website                     (COM-006)   

Learning Objective:  Students learn how to create a personal website that reflects their individual brand. Special emphasis is placed on terminology, components and design.

Topics:  How to secure a URL (domain name) and set-up a personal website; Guidelines for website design

 Social media rules of the road           (COM-007)  

Learning Objective:  Students learn practical ‘do’s and don’ts’ when using social media. Special emphasis is placed on promoting individual brand and expanding business networks.

Topics:  Establish and promote your personal brand; How to “talk” on Twitter and Facebook; How to “shine online”

Exercises:  A 1-2-3 action plan for social media

 Leverage LinkedIn              (COM-008)  

Learning Objective:  Students learn how to use LinkedIn to find a job, and build (and protect) their reputation. Special emphasis is placed on developing a network of peers who can help with career advancement.

Topics:  Creating profiles that capture attention; Marketing yourself online; Using LinkedIn to find job opportunities, expand networks, and meet new people

Manage your Facebook reputation           (COM-009)  

Learning Objective:  Students learn how to create an effective profile and use Facebook tools. Special emphasis is placed on privacy and controls. 

Topics:  Creating the ins and outs of your profile; Privacy settings; Review of Facebook tools; How to “shine online”

 Take the lead with Twitter              (COM-010)  

Learning Objective:  Students learn how to create a Twitter profile and promote and protect their individual brand.  Special emphasis is placed on using Twitter effectively and efficiently.

Topics:  Building a complete profile in 140 characters; Understand terminology; Tools to promote your brand on Twitter

Shine online through visual channels      (COM-011)  

Learning Objective:  Students learn how to use Pinterest, YouTube and other social media channels. Special emphasis is placed on consistent brand messaging through all social media.
